Right of Way and Lane Courtesy

  • One-Lane Courtesy: The golden rule of the approach. If a bowler on the lane immediately to your left or right is already standing on the approach, wait for them to throw their shot and step off before you step up.

  • Yield to the Right: If you and a bowler on an adjacent lane step up to the approach at the exact same time, the standard etiquette is to yield to the bowler on the right.

  • Stay in Your Lane: Keep your physical body and your reactions within your own lane's boundaries. Drifting into the adjacent approach area after releasing the ball is dangerous and distracting to others.

Pace of Play

  • Be Ready: Have your pre-shot routine dialed in before it’s your turn. Make sure your switch grip is locked in, your shammy is nearby, and you are ready to step onto the approach as soon as the lane clears.

  • Clear the Approach: Once your ball hits the pins and you see the result, walk back to the seating area. Lingering at the foul line to watch your ball travel back through the return holds up the bowlers next to you.

Equipment and Environment

  • Protect the Approach: The wood approach must remain perfectly clean and dry for sliding. Never walk into the bowling area with wet street shoes, and keep all beverages—even a seasonal iced coffee—safely on the tables behind the settee area to prevent disastrous spills.

  • Respect Others' Gear: Never handle another bowler's ball, powder, or personal equipment without explicit permission.

  • Control Your Loft: While some loft is natural depending on lane conditions, excessively launching the ball halfway down the lane damages the wood and disrupts the rhythm of the entire house.

Sportsmanship

  • Minimize Distractions: Avoid shouting, jumping, or making sudden movements in your peripheral vision when someone nearby is starting their physical approach.

  • Keep Your Cool: Bad breaks, pocket splits, and ringing 10-pins happen. Keep frustration in check; taking it out on the ball return or hitting the scoring consoles brings down the energy of the whole league.
